Last Time

Standard

Black off the shoulder dress,

Patterned with little pink flowers.

My skin

Tan and sand brushed.

Last time I wore it was in Egypt.

A beautiful night, it was.

Clear and star filled.

I feel everything all at once when I look at.

Barefeet continued

Dancing long after they hurt.

Laughed and smiled so much;

People thought I was drunk.

It has a hole in it I never fixed,

I kept it anyway.

So there it hangs with a variety of other

Colorful memories.

Time to sew it up or let it go.

Despair

Standard

He (she too) knows he is called strange
And beautiful in the same breath.

His (her) delight in life contagious

But then

Given time

And the right mix of elements

He (she does) crashes

And no words nor touch

Can reach him.

Blinded and numb.

He regresses.

He recoils.

(She turns within)

For no one can save him and he knows this.

They do not fathom the depths

Of despair.

(She knows)

He can hold his breath longer

For he knows at the surface

The darkness waits unbidden.

It always waits

Unbidden and unseen by others.

(They do not see it

They do not feel it)

And they lose patience

Going on their way

To fill their own void for they cannot hold their

breath any longer.

(She is still there)

And he resurfaces.

Returns from the untime

To be aware.

Skin tender, jaw tight

Legs jelly

And goes on.

Invites others from empty tables to join him.

Holds others when their arms are too full

And smiles

Because he is thankful they have not swam so

deep into the darkness as he.

(He sees remnants of shadows on her eyes)

As If You Did Nothing

Standard

I do not think you know this
Because
You are
Always looking at others
As if
Better than yourself,
But
Light itself
Travels the universe
With joy
To be
Reflected
From your skin.
You cast that love so far,
So high,
You have helped others create wings
To touch the sky.
And then you smile

And
You walk away.

You walk away as if
You
Did nothing.

Would Never Guess

Standard

for most of her life

(more than less)

she was in a state of heightened

fight or flight

her head dizzy

her breathing uncontrolled

her senses and mind wired as tight as a cat ready to run

watching body language

reading expressions and eyes

listening to tone

holding her breath waiting to bolt or duck at any given moment

her whole body racing while standing still

as soon as someone spoke to her, her mind flooded with confusion.

why me? can’t you see i am the ugliest, stupidest most disgusting person here. i am slow

of thought and of no interest.

you must be mistaken.

I am no one.

But you would never guess. Or you might consider then brush it off. she smiles and nods her

head.

Have a nice day, she might say.

by the way she quickly moves away

you would never guess the weight she carries is so very heavy.

For You

Standard

the tremble in his voice

the ache in his heart

his blood and sweat

the reach of his hand

His strength as he stands

you have made his world beauty itself

he has walked this earth to see you smile and carries you everywhere with him.

his dreams

his heart malleable in your heartbeat

his eyes

his soul for you

all for you

In between

Standard

He’s the in between.

Born on the cusp.

He is winter in spring.

A flower blooming in the frigid cold,

Not sure where to go…..

He shines a light all his own.

Smiles to share yet

He cries alone.

On gilded wings she’s watched

Him fly too close to the sun.

So here she waits

Ready to catch him,

Ready to hold him

When he falls.

Wings singed;

Heart-tired he falls heavy.

She sings softly now

Cradling him in the in between.

Sharing her breath until he can

Breathe on his own once again.

Affintiy

Standard

Yes I have an affinity

For

Rainbows

And

Getting lost.

Kind words and lip gloss.

Singing in the rain

And record players.

Wind in my hair

And

Silence.

Dancing by myself and stranger’s grins.

Sand in my toes

And the smell of mountain air

On my skin.

So many little things that go so far.

Yes they make me smile.

You see

These little things save me

From myself.

I Knew Him

Standard

I knew him then.

The boy.

The child.

I knew him when the sun played on his shoulders.

When a glance at the clouds above would set him free.

When nothing could stop him from

Dancing

Or

Smiling.

It is as if another lifetime now.

I do not know what happened out there in the world.

I do not know who stole

Delight from his veins.

But I do know

Whoever

Stole it,

They did not take it all.

For

I see it in his shadow.
