Momma Said

Standard

Momma said she quit

And a thousand times

I smelled it sleeping on her breath.

Lies. Secrets. Whispers.

Deals in the shadows.

Cop cars and knives.

Mixed in the coke can,

I’d take a sip and choke.

Swallowed with pills.

Bottles

Almost empty.

Tucked behind the bed.

Hidden in drawers and shelves.

She thought she had me fooled

But then she’d forget.

Longing

Standard

Some are born with a longing.

With questions unanswered at first breath.

The ones from beyond the bonds of gravity.

An innate craving.

They are led to believe they are crazy.

They know

If you do not dare to go looking beyond the other side

Then you will never find

What you’ve been longing for.

Everything in them pulls them elsewhere;

Outside the constraints of the body.

Limitless.

Retract

Standard

Retract your claws.

Release your grasp

On old hurts and regrets of the past.

Those

Wounds left open

And afflicted in you by others.

Wrongs done by you yourself as well.

Misunderstandings and assumptions

Creating resentment in your belly.

Release them into the stillness.

This is not a practice round but you already know that.

And you wonder why,

Oh why

Sweet misery still beds you.

Untie the binds that restrain you from

Reaching.

From touching.

From holding love to your heart.

Do not wait.
